A new study confirms one controversial cancer theory – Yeast in our body can cause cancer.
Critical Reviews in Microbiology published a study (called: “Candida albicans and cancer: Can this yeast induce cancer development or progression) which claims that Candida albicans (yeast) infection can cause cancer.

Here are the four ways in which Candida albicans can contribute to cancer:
· Production of carcinogenic byproducts: Candida Albicans produces carcinogens called nitrosamines. They activate specific proto-oncogenes that could activate cancerous lesions. Also, Candida albicans creates acetaldehyde, which is produced as the first metabolite of ethanol (the yeast fermentation byproduct). This is a DNA-damaging (mutagenic) and carcinogenic chemical with numerous cancer properties.
· Triggering of inflammation: Prolonged inflammation can raise the risk of getting cancer in two ways. First, by causing damage to tissue. Second, through the secretion of proliferative chemicals which should stimulate the regeneration of damaged tissue, but which can make tissue immortalized when the inflammation is chronic. Candida albicans raises the inflammatory responses inside the body when growing above their normal population density because of immunosuppression, inappropriate diet, and chemical exposure. These inflammatory responses promote increases in tumor cell adhesion, which causes the creation of secondary tumors and/or metastasis.
· Induction of Th17 response: The set of CD4 T-cells that is dominant in response to Candida albicans, namely, TH17 cells, also secrete factors that can cause angiogenesis (the creation of new blood vessels) and increased tumor growth.
· Molecular mimicry: Antibodies produced against a protein on the surface of Candida Albicans (CR3-RP) has structural and antigenic similarities with a receptor on certain of our leukocytes (white blood cells). This “molecular mimicry” can trigger antibodies to be created against our immune cells that then disrupt the anti-tumor and anti-Candida defenses of the host.
Turmeric – The Super Remedy:
European Journal of Pharmacology published a study which claims that the primary polyphenol in turmeric known as curcumin can be the best weapon in the fight with cancers that have a fungal component.
The study is concentrated on the problem of invasive fungal infections, as a major reason for morbidity and mortality in cancer patients. Effective anti-infection therapy is needed to prevent major deterioration from these infections. However, they are difficult to treat, and increasing antifungal drug resistance almost always leads to a relapse. So, the authors suggest that curcumin can be a fantastic natural alternative, knowing its anticancer properties. The research explains that conventional treatments usually cause damage to the patient’s immune system, and this is a major factor for fungal overgrowth. Also, conventional drugs for fungal infections can be very harm for the liver and kidneys of patients, causing even more, aggressive, treatment-resistant fungal infections.
According to the researchers, curcumin is the “next generation multipurpose drug.” Not only does it combat fungal infections, but it also has the power to destroy the cancer stem cell subpopulation, which is at the root of cancer malignancy and recurrence. The study concluded that there is a need for more researches that will help us to better understand the anticancer and the antifungal mechanisms of curcumin.
