Every woman wants a clean and healthy vagina, but most of them also use harsh chemical products when they have an infection or some other problem down there. Steam cleaning and other suspicious methods are not doing your vagina a favor – if you want to preserve its health, you need to treat it properly. Here are 4 things you should never, ever do to your vagina:
- Avoid steaming!
Steam cleaning of the vagina is a very bad idea. Generally, if it’s not a carpet, you shouldn’t steam it. As Raquel Dardik, a clinical associate professor at NYU Langone Medical Center’s department of obstetrics and gynecology said, ‘’If you want to burn your vagina, then steam clean it.’
- Inserting strange objects
The things allowed into the vagina are fingers, tampons, sex toys, penis (of course!), birth control pills, lube and menstrual cups – that’s it. Inserting anything other than that can cause irritation and damage your vagina.
- Stop douching!
There are many products on the market which can make your vagina smell nice, but as Constance Young, an assistant professor at Columbia University Medical Center’s department of obstetrics and gynecology said explains, these products will only make the vaginal microflora more prone to infections.
The vagina needs to clean itself – it doesn’t require any chemical products or scents. Squirting a vaginal douche will only neutralize the natural acidity in the vagina and impair the organ’s ability to clean itself. Don’t fall on the advertising – companies are only thinking of their profits, and will sell anything which brings them money. If you want to clean your vagina, use only soap and water.
- Treating yourself is a bad idea
You should avoid using natural remedies for your vagina. As Dardik says, untested natural remedies will worsen the state of your vagina and damage it as well.
