Summer is here and this is usually the time where many people look for a great advice on getting rid of ants in their house. According to a study conducted at Stanford University, ants infest our homes due to the weather conditions. Sadly, pest control products are dangerous for our health, and as the National Library of Medicine’s Toxicology Data Network reports, cypermethrin (one of 2 active ingredients in Raid Ant & Roach Spray) causes shortness of breath, coughing and congestion, and may cause asthma attacks or wheezing.
The main ingredients in most commercial insecticides is a nerve agent which disrupts the ants’ nervous system through direct contact. However, these toxic chemicals have the same effects on humans.
Instead of using dangerous chemicals, you should try use peppermint oil which can be safely sprinkled on any surface and area in your home and works just as well as insecticides. The scent of the oil disrupts the ants’ trails and communication, while also covering their bodies when they crawl through it. Here’s how to make your own natural ant repellent:
30 drops of clove essential oil
30 drops of peppermint essential oil
4 oz. of water
Mix all ingredients well in a spray bottle, then shake it and spray on the areas frequented by ants. Repeat as many times as needed.
