Painful cramps and muscle contractions keep many people from getting a full night’s rest. There are a variety of remedies that can be prescribed over the counter or cooked up in the kitchen at home, but this one is by far the strangest. Placing a bar of soap under the sheets before bed is a bizarre folk remedy that actually seems to bring relief. While many people discard this remedy as nothing more than an old wives tale, there are just as many who laud it’s effectiveness.
How the bar of soap helps isn’t clear. There is a vague argument that the soap releases “helpful ions” but we couldn’t find much science behind that argument. Surprisingly the urban legend debunker Snopes has a mostly positive review of this remedy, even if it may just be a placebo effect. According to Snopes, “Slipping a bar of soap into the bed as a leg cramp prevention has been advanced by a number of authorities, both medical and otherwise. Ann Landers has mentioned the soap cure in her column on a number of occasions, with each airing prompting a load of letters from readers thanking her for this information because it worked wonders for them. “They were thrilled and grateful to be liberated from those leg cramps,” said Ms. Landers.”
If you’re in enough pain, you’ll be willing to try almost anything. Who care’s how crazy the remedy sounds if it actually provides some relief?
